„Frame these artists” – a campaign by MNAR and the Nottara Theatre
Works from the National Museum of Art of Romania Collection interpreted by actors from the Nottara Theatre as part of the “Frame these Artists” campaign
The National Museum of Art of Romania and the Nottara Theater launch “Frame these Artists” campaign - a joint initiative in response to difficult times for cultural institutions and the need to bring art closer to people.
As of 11 May 2020 the on-line campaign will feature actors from the Nottara Theatre interpreting art works from the museum’s collections. Every Monday, the two institutions will publish on their Facebook pages images of well-known paintings and sculptures alongside photographs in which actors take the characters’ posture and re-create the artworks
Various museums around the world invited the public to creatively recreate artworks using readily available resources; “Frame these Artists” follows on a similar invitation launched by the museum on 15 April (International Art Day).
The campaign aims to challenge the public to go beyond an entertaining manner of giving works of art a passing glimpse while comparing the original and the actor’s playful take on it. In short videos, the ‘framed actors’ give a brief overview of the artwork with which they had a chance to grow familiar, based on information provided by the museum’s curators. The theatre-museum encounter will thus enable people to enjoy works of art in the company of professional actors.
The campaign launches with Buchetiera (The Flower Girl) by Romanian painter Mihail Lapaty (1816-1860). This is ‘framed’ for the occasion by actress Ioana Calotă who also tells the story of the painting and the character it features – Romanian Princess Maria Cantacuzino, the painter’s sitter for this allegorical portrait.
Follow us on our Facebook pages, Muzeul Național de Artă al României and Teatrul Nottara, to enjoy both visual art and theatre. The two cultural institutions continued to service their audience and the cultural constituency at large through an active on line presence during this difficult period. The campaign “Frame these Artists” will give online visitors the opportunity to enjoy, share and stay connected with and through art.
