The Maitecs: one family, two generations, three visual idioms (painting, sculpture, photography), four artists whose destinies developed in close proximity while searching for their individual, unique voice and path in art. Such is the Maitec story, one intimately woven into and shaping the story of Romanian art during the past fifty years.

Wood Gold Light is the most comprehensive exhibition dedicated to Ovidiu and Sultana Maitec since their 2001 exhibition at the National Museum of Art of Romania; their work is now presented in an unprecedented visual dialogue with that of Stéphane and Dana Maitec.

Ovidiu and Sultana Maitec are, undeniably, genuine milestones in the evolution of Romanian painting and sculpture after 1950. Wood Gold Light takes a contemporary perspective on their creation, by instituting a dialogue with a new artistic idiom, photography. Since 2002 Stéphane Maitec, the couple’s son, works alongside Dana Maitec; the two form a duo with an impressive international career in art photography. Reflections, their most recent series of works, puts forward a spectacular visual experiment which brings together painting, sculpture and photography, in a fascinating interplay of reflections; the result is a new and fluid art genre, showing a novel approach to light.
Formerly shown in France, the United States, Switzerland, Belgium, Italy, works in this series are presented for the first time in Romania; they may first seem similar to painting or, through the illusion of being tridimensional, to sculpture, however, they are pure photography.
