The exhibition "Zambaccian on Pallady"
Collector and art critic Krikor H. Zambaccian (1889-1962) assembled one of the richest and most valuable art collections in Romania. In the 1940s, Zambaccian built a house specifically to showcase the paintings, sculptures, graphics, and furniture he had acquired over half a century. Both the collection and the house were donated to the Romanian state in 1947, and Zambaccian was welcomed as a member of the Romanian Academy.
The Romanian artworks offer a condensed view of its historical development - from Theodor Aman, Nicolae Grigorescu, and Ioan Andreescu - to the works of Ștefan Luchian, Nicolae Tonitza, Theodor Pallady, Gheorghe Petrașcu, and continuing with Corneliu Baba, Alexandru Phoebus, and Horia Damian. Sculptures by Brâncuși, Milița Petrașcu, Oscar Han, and Cornel Medrea complete this important panorama of Romanian art.
In addition, the museum features a series of paintings by renowned masters such as Cézanne, Picasso, Matisse, Bonnard, Utrillo, Marquet, which are unique in Romania.
Under the theme "Pallady 150," the National Museum of Art of Romania organized four exhibitions dedicated to the 150th anniversary of the birth of the painter Theodor Pallady (1871-1956), one of the most important Romanian artists. The exhibitions aim to present unique aspects of his work related to the artworks in the MNAR heritage
The exhibition "Zambaccian on Pallady" at the K.H. Zambaccian Museum aims to sketch a character portrait of Theodor Pallady through excerpts from an article about the artist published by collector Krikor H. Zambaccian in the volume "Notes of an Art Lover”.
The curatorial approach involves juxtaposing the referenced paintings with a series of self-portraits created by Pallady in his mature years, always characterized by sharp lines and decisive tones, in harmony with the description of his character provided directly or indirectly by Zambaccian's text.
